It’s currently Wednesday and all week I’ve been struggling for something to write about. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking into my blog and how I want to present myself. When I created Style By Flossie in 2018, I set out to be primarily a fashion blogger. Obviously, I took a very long and unintentional year-and-a-half break, and now things feel a little different.
It’s not a bad kind of different. Though I suppose it’s not a good different either. I feel like I’m at the beginning of a blogging identity crisis, and here’s why…
What Does It Mean To Be A Fashion Blogger?
This may seem like an obvious question at first; of course, a fashion blogger writes about fashion. Let’s think a little more deeply than that. What kind of content do they produce? How often is content created? What themes come up again and again?
What I’ve seen, from following these blogs, are regular OOTD’s, how to style a current trend, clothing hauls, sale shopping/bargain hunting, etc. Established fashion bloggers will receive gifted clothing, which they will then have to talk about for an ad, or become ambassadors for a brand, and will promote new items and sales.
For anyone that knows me, or follows me closely online, will know that recently I’ve been made aware of the issues surrounding sustainability in the fashion industry. In fact, I wrote a whole blog post about small but impactful changes we can make as individuals to combat the environmental implications of fashion. So, this is where my problem lies.
Can Sustainable Bloggers Keep Up To Fashion Blog Expectations?
I’ve been doing my absolute best this year to not fall into the fast fashion trap. By trying to be sustainable, as well as trying to curb my excessive spending habits, I have massively reduced the amount of money I spend on clothing. In fact, this year so far I have only bought one new item of clothing, which was a band shirt from a recent gig I went to! So, as well as this being a sentimental item, the funds also went towards supporting an artist I love.
However, I find myself constantly falling short on fashion content to produce. I’m still interested in fashion, and ideally, still want this to be my primary blog focus. I am constantly researching blogging, trying to improve and separate myself with a clear niche. The question is: Is my niche restricting me?
How can I write about trends if they are so short-lived? How can I repurpose old clothes to be trendy when I have absolutely zero skill in textiles and sewing? Why on Earth would I do a haul if I’m trying to be sustainable? How many times can I use the same item of clothing in my blog posts before my content becomes stale? These are things that are bugging me every day.
I’ve considered maybe buying from vintage stores or charity shops, but again, am I not just buying for the sake of it?
How Can I Be Sustainable and A Fashion Blogger?
I’m asking a whole lot of questions into thin air in this p0st, and I don’t expect any answers. A lot of this is just me thinking out loud and hoping for someone to point me in the right direction. I feel like my blog posts have this tone of ‘I know what I’m doing and I know what I’m talking about’ but I honestly have no idea!
Though, going back to the question, I think I’m going to start by having a deep clean of my wardrobe in the near future. I’m just guessing, but perhaps part of the problem is that my tastes are changing. I’ve noticed recently I’ve been really into neutral/natural tones, and my wardrobe lacks that kind of colour palette. It may be the reason I feel as though I’m burning through the same few outfits every week.
Once I’ve decluttered, I’ll probably try and do some charity shop sweeps, have a look through Depop, and find some small businesses and handmade items online. This could either be really cheap or really pricey but by doing these things, I might learn something. Which in turn might give me something to talk about to keep this ‘fashion blogger’ title.
Has Anyone Got Any Advice?
This is a genuine call out for help, I am struggling! In the meantime, I’ll probably keep doing what I’m doing by creating these thinking-out-loud posts and posting outfit pictures in between sections. As always, anything that’s still being sold, I’ll link at the bottom of my posts.
Please – and I can’t stress this enough – if you have any ideas for how I can move past this or overcome it or rework it to my advantage, please drop me a message on any of my social channels, or leave a comment below.
Joggers from Topshop | Crop Top from Topshop | Glasses from Moschino (old) | Scrunchie from Depop
