It’s a Monday evening in early November. I’m scrolling mindlessly through Instagram, watching people’s stories, when I come across something that piques my interest. It’s @choicesbychloe‘s story, and she’s talking about some reusable makeup removing pads. I had seen quite a few reusable cotton pads coming up on social media ads, but there was nothing special about them that really made me want to buy them. That was until I stumbled across JoJo Glow.
About The Microfibre Pads

For £18 you receive 3 makeup removing pads; 2x 10cm pads, and a larger 12cm pad. They come in 3 colours, white, pastel blue, and gold. The greatest selling points for me personally were that the pads are cruelty-free, vegan, and sustainable! The brand boasts that the pads can be washed up to 200 times, making them well worth the price when you consider how many single-use cotton pads you would have to buy over time. On top of that, the packaging is biodegradable, unlike many single-use cotton pads that come in non-recyclable plastic wrapping.
Still not convinced? JoJo Glow claims that you can remove your makeup with water only when you use their microfibre pads! According to the product description, the fibres are 100x finer than human hair which means the pads can deep clean your skin while also removing your makeup. Does this mean we could be saving ourselves additional money? Not just money on cotton pads alone, but also money on cleansers and exfoliators?
Predictions & Observations Before Use

I won’t lie – I was sceptical when I read that I could remove my makeup with the simple combination of the microfibre pads and water. You see, I use the Eyeko Beach Waterproof mascara and it’s pretty much indestructible, even when using an oil-based cleanser. Despite this, I still wanted to give it a try. Maybe it’s some kind of miracle-working product?
The pads do have a luxury look and feel to them. They’re very soft, and the fibres feel quite dense. One thing I was surprised at was just how thick the pads are! I’m a big fan of the different coloured outlines – I think blue is my favourite!
I was worried that after removing my makeup with them for the first time, the pads would become immediately discoloured after the first wash. I also worried that the pads would lose their brand-new softness, and instead become coarse, with the fibres drying stuck together.
Putting JoJo Glow To The Test

So, to set the scene: I’m wearing a full face of makeup; foundation set with powder and setting spray, eyebrows set with gel, waterproof eyeliner and my indestructible mascara, and liquid lipstick. I’m ready to attempt removing it all with just water!
After soaking the pad in warm/hot water, I squeeze out the excess liquid and begin trying to remove the makeup using circular motions. I was surprised to see the makeup coming off so easily! I would have never imagined that you could remove makeup just using hot water.
Then, I get to the showdown with my mascara, which unsurprisingly has barely budged at all. The instructions on the JoJo Glow packaging said to hold the warmed pads against any stubborn areas, so I tried this for a while, but still the mascara was not co-operating! Finally, I resorted to putting some of my Aesop Parsley Seed Facial Cleanser onto the pads and soaking my eyelashes with those. At last, this works and my makeup as been totally removed!
Final Thoughts
Although it’s not entirely true that the JoJo Glow pads can remove makeup using only water, it did a bloody good job up until the mascara part! They feel lovely on the skin and you can tell that they’re such high quality. After washing them I was pleased to find they felt as good as they did when they were brand new – and just as clean!
I really don’t mind that I sometimes have to use a cleanser to help the makeup soak off. In fact, it actually makes my skin feel even cleaner! The pads also have an exfoliating texture to them, meaning I don’t always need to use an exfoliating product. Sometimes I like to get one of my spare clean pads and double cleanse to make sure my skin is totally clean.
Since I don’t wear makeup every day, I like to keep out at least one clean pad so I can use it to cleanse my skin with my Galinée Prebiotic Face Foaming Cleanser, once in the morning, and once in the evening. I will then rinse it out with warm water after use and reuse until my next white washing day.
Are You Still Using Single-Use Cotton Pads?
I would highly recommend making the switch to more sustainable alternatives, like the JoJo Glow Microfibre pads. Click here if you’re interested in buying your own! If you haven’t made the switch yet, what’s stopping you?
